Been extremely busy...and a bit lazy. Was going to post images of an extended road-trip (9/2-17) to the NorthWest ; visiting relatives, a wedding and birthday. "best laid plans etc..." Camera suddenly became inoperable.
The images are of the Unabomber cabin we inhabited for four (4) days in northern central Washington state at the hamlet of Wintrop...a nephew's wedding event. We'd planned a drift-trip on the Methow river but there was a horrendous thunder, lighting and rain event in the North Cascades National Park; which blew-out the river into mud.
Fall is here and fishing is improving daily...stay tuned. I've ordered a new camera!

Givers & Takers....
I felt I was due for some proselytising. I thought I'd revisit one of my first blog entries; it is timely because there are quite a few fishery-conservation issues being discussed/planned in the Truckee area. Recently there was a meeting of guides in Truckee that was organized by TU...a good start to get people off their rears. But as I like to say and challenge the locals; "You talk da talk, now it is time to walk da walk".
Both TU and Cal Trout were represented at the gathering...along with numerous guides and the four (4) Tahoe National Forest permittees were represented; three of the four actual holders were in attendance. The hope is that all interests can work collaboratively together and really get things done. Some anglers are active; most are not....
...from a 2009 post (with minor editing):
"Personally, I'm a firm believer in giving back to a resource that has been good to you. In this case...your "home-water". If in fact you fly fish a specific area or water..."Put your body or $$$ where your flies are!"
Whether you make $$$, as I do from guiding in the Truckee area, or whether you regularly fly fish the area...you should give-back via:
1---Getting politically active in ensuring that your local fishery and its habitat is protected, preserved and enhanced.
2-Volunteering your body for hands-on projects relative to protecting and preserving the fishery
3---Give $$$ to an organization that has your local fishery in mind.
Minimally one, of the above indicates that you care about your fishery; doing all three...Great!
If you do none of the above as an angler but take advantage of the special regulations that have been put in place via the aforementioned three items...simply, you are a taker. In the case of those who make $$$ from the fishery...in my view...you are an exploiter...and a unconscionable TAKER...who in reality does not care about the health of the fishery and merely looks at it as a source of income...absolutely no "give-back". Think about it....
I have no problem if you disagree with the above...as long as you're civil and we can amiably agree to disagree."

I'm Alive!...#2
There seems to be a pattern here. My last "I'm Alive" post was 8/4/12. The duplicate excuse is that I've been REALLY busy guiding and conducting scheduled and private,
novice fly fishing clinics.
There has been very little time for personal fly fishing; let alone posting on this blog. Suffice it to say we are now in an early "dog days of summer" and soon (I hope) will provide a long post of commentary and images of what has occurred in the Truckee area....the last 5-plus weeks.
...thanks for your patience.
Frankie da Procastinator
NOTE: Green Drakes have been present in the Truckee area since the first week of June!! As of yesterday they were still emerging on a local water...Unbelievable, fishable Green Drake fly angling for at least 6 weeks.

Pet Peeve #4: LACK OF ETIQUETTE
The lack of etiquette exhibited by fly anglers always amazes me (not to mention ruin my fishing!). Last night's example was a classic example of the lack of BASIC manners; a downstream working fly angler not getting out of the water a sufficient distance away from an upstream fishing angler (me) and then getting below and continuing on. In this case, the fella comes around a bush into my path....as in 25'-30'!
I've come to the realization that 90% of the lapses in basic etiquette is that anglers are simply not aware of their poor stream-side behavior...it is not malicious. They simply have not been informed/educated by fishing friends, fly shops, schools or guides. The real jerks are the 10% who KNOW they are violating etiquette; they simply want to beat another to a spot or area. For the uninformed, it is an opportunity to educate, for "gamers"...one has to decide how to interact.

E-Quickie Report #13
Well, I officially declare it is Summertime!...even though it chronologically doesn't start until June 21.
5/31--- "...Going fishing right now…no consistent rise activity yet. Bugs are starting to emerge. LT being lowered…thus far indi-fishing is the most productive…but can change quickly….Everyone on the Green Drake watch now".
A few caddis in two different sizes (18 & 14), Little Yellow Stones and a tiny crème-colored mayfly dun…no rising fish…"
6/6---"Well, it was better about 10 days ago before we got this
warming trend. Nevertheless trout are being stuck…no numbers. Largest
fish…a couple of 18”-19” RB’s…no big browns…to 14”. Still no consistent rises
to bugs and we’re still looking for the Green Drake (…can be here any
day). Caddis are starting, PMD’s, Little Yellow Stones, Crane flies, fading
BWO’s and few midges. Mosquitos have become an issue in the LT Meadow...so bad a fishing buddy had to leave they were so ferocious..."
You may hit it right. BT water is warming; got a 63 between Prosser
and Boca yesterday. The BT will be very warm soon. Thunder right now...and rain (4PM…Thursday)
6/7--- "…64 degrees along Glenshire at 3 PM…indicator nymphing with 3-4 BB…#12 Prince and #16 BHFBPT proved
effective today…still few bugs in flight...Occasionally we're moving a trout to the surface; searching with a #10 Black Ant or a #14 Olive Elk Hair Caddis. We're now into a summer mode and I may be guiding "split-days" to optimize best opportunities for clients”.
NOTE: I've reviewed my past E-Quickie Reports...I now have the # sequence correct.
